Juniors compete in LLS campaign
Sanford Juniors Emma Colby, Maddy Duzy, and Samantha Young sold roses for Valentine’s Day as a part of their joint campaign for Leukemia-Lymphoma Society Student of the Year. This was the most recent event in a string of events to raise money for their campaign.
“I’ve seen other people go through the [campaign] process at our school before and how good this mission is, how worthy it is to support,” said Colby. “So, I wanted to do it.”
Sanford has had other students compete in the state-wide competition in previous years. Last year, Morgan Silvers competed, and in 2018 Grace Johnston won the competition.
“[We] definitely reached out to [Johnston] a lot of times for help. She’s been really good with telling us what she did and sponsors to reach out to who she got in the past. Morgan was really informative more about logistics about how the campaign works,” commentated Colby on the help their campaign has received from past campaigners.
Their campaign has raised over $15,000 dollars for the LLS. They’ve used a mix of larger corporate sponsors and school events with mainly student volunteers to raise the majority of it.
“I think the [students] that raise the most money [for us] are kids that are in our grade because they understand what’s going on. People that we have more access to quickly are pretty helpful; they help with the events, mostly,” praised Duzy and Colby.
The next event the group will be hosting is the Silent Disco on Saturday, February 22, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. Tickets for the disco will be sold throughout the week for $10 in the Upper School Commons.
