Sanford athletes score big on college scholarships

How does saving $25,000 per year on college sound? Good? Great? Fantastic? Just ask all the Sanford athletes that earn scholarship money and get the chance to go to college for a discount, or even free.

When you think of high school sports in Delaware you might think of a big public school with thousands of students, but a small private school called Sanford, located in Hockessin Delaware, will make you think otherwise. Sanford School is not only dominant in academics, but the athletics are powerhouse worthy as well. Sanford School has multiple sports programs with athletes that go on to play in college.

Sanford’s Athletic director Joan Samonsky said, “We’ve probably had more basketball players go on to play collegiately, but as I look back to my career at Sanford [32 years] we’ve had collegiate athletes in every sport we offer, and that even includes sailing,” which we added most recently.

It’s almost every athlete’s dream to go to a program where they feel welcomed and accepted. Feeling welcomed is a key part of Sanford School’s philosophy, while developing their athletes into the best form of themselves.

“[Sanford School’s] Coaching has pushed me hard and prepared me for the next level”. Towson Women’s Basketball commit Allie Kubek said. “The Coaches love to talk about what’s to come in college, and thanks to Sanford I’m confident to say I’m ready for it.” Kubek Will be playing for Towson this upcoming fall.

At Sanford there’s quite some college experience on deck within the coaches. Many of the coaches have gone on to play at the collegiate level, bringing back their wisdom and providing it to the players.

“Some of the lacrosse coaches are former Division 1 coaches, and some of them are even former players. It helps a lot to get advice from them, because I know they have been in my position before,” Drexel Women’s Lacrosse commit Annie Leo Said. Annie committed to Drexel early this school year over Elon, La Salle, Villanova, Virginia Tech, and more.

Many may think it’s the Championship banners or game-winning goals that’ll be remembered and missed by the athletes graduating this upcoming summer. According to many of the athletes the bond that was created with their teammates and coaches, is what will truly be missed by the athletes.

“I’ll definitely miss my team. We’ve had pretty much a small team here at Sanford, so we easily became really close over my years here. Everyone just became one really big family,” UMBC Swimming commit Bella Warner said.

The list of athletes goes on and on: from McDaniel’s Men’s Baseball commit Jack Valentine, to Providence Men’s Basketball commit Jyare Davis, to Baylor Acrobatics and Tumbling commit Zoe Collins, and many more. Almost every sport you can think of, Sanford School has developed and prepared their athletes to continue at the next level. While being ranked as one of the best private schools in the state, Sanford’s sports resume proves that Sanford is athletically one of the best programs in the state as well.
